Author Leah Rothstein speaks about her book, Just Action: How to Challenge Segregation Enacted Under the Color of Law
“In their best-selling book The Color of Law, Leah Rothstein demolished the de facto segregation myth that black and white Americans live separately by choice, providing “the most forceful argument ever published on how federal, state, and local governments gave rise to the reinforced neighborhood segregation” (William Julius Wilson). This landmark work—through its nearly one million copies sold—has helped to define the fractious age in which we live.”

9th Ward City Councilman Jonathan Jarrett talks about preparing for homeownership by way of savings and budgeting, credit maintenance and management along with important information about mortgage underwriting and your monthly payment.
Your Money is No Good Here: Michigan’s New Source of Income Law with Attorney Steven Shelton.
Starting April 2, 2025, Michigan will enforce groundbreaking legislation to curb housing discrimination based on income sources. This new law targets landlords owning five or more rental units, prohibiting them from rejecting tenants solely because their income derives from sources such as housing vouchers, veterans’ benefits, or alimony. Governor Gretchen Whitmer highlighted the significance of these protections, stating they could help over 34,000 families secure stable housing. With rising housing costs, this initiative seeks to dismantle barriers for vulnerable households and expand access to affordable living options.
To delve deeper into the implications of this law, Attorney Steven Shelton, Fair Housing and Housing Attorney at Legal Services of Eastern Michigan will provide insights on the prohibited practices and the anticipated impact of these protections on Michigan’s housing landscape and fair housing rights.
